Lunch
Lunch is served from 12.10 and classes attend on a rota so that each year group will get a chance to be on early lunch.  Pupils must bring money for lunch on a daily basis.

A typical menu includes homemade soup, salads, selection of sandwiches and baguettes, a variety of hot meals and desserts, while yoghurt and fresh fruit are also available.  The School will continue to look at ways of encouraging pupils to eat healthily.  Each pupil is responsible for clearing away plates and cutlery and generally ensuring that tables are kept clean.  Junior 1 children may only bring a packed lunch and parents will be notified when they may start having school lunches.  Pupils should not eat in the corridors or drink from a bottle while walking around the School.

Playground

The playground is always supervised by a member of staff.  Nursery and prep have their own area which is fenced off from the main playground.  There is a football rota for use of the pitch.  We operate an incentive scheme for courteous and considerate behaviour within the playground.  Staff supervise playground games as well as free play.

School Opening Times
The School is open to pupils from 08.00.  Access to the building is restricted by coded entry.  Pupils will be advised of the code at the start of the session and whenever the code is altered.  Pupils may use the playgrounds or sit in cloakrooms or common rooms before registration. Pupils should not enter form rooms until the bell has rung at 08.40.

Registration

Pupils are expected to arrive punctually for registration.  Form Teachers will send details of absences, latecomers and medical appointments to Reception for collation.  Absence notes must be handed in to the Form Teacher who will keep these on file.  Important information is often distributed at Registration.  Form Teachers regularly check diaries to ensure that homework is completed and diaries signed.

Absence Procedures
Parents must telephone or email:
absence@st-columbas.org by 09.15 on each day of a pupil’s absence.  If the School does not receive a communication from the parent of an absent pupil, the parents will be contacted (using home and mobile numbers supplied by parents) by 09.30.

A note explaining the cause of a pupil’s absence should be given to the Form Teacher on his or her return to School.  All pupils who have a medical or other appointment should bring a note to their Form Teacher in advance.

Request for Leave of Absence
If it is necessary for a pupil to have leave of absence for:

  • up to one day – please put your request in writing to the Head of House
  • longer than one day – please put your request in writing to the Rector

If a pupil falls ill at School
If a pupil feels unwell during the School day, he or she should inform the class teacher, (or Duty Rector during long break) who will send him or her to the office.  Members of the office, who are trained in First Aid, will make an initial assessment.  If the pupil should go home, then the parents will be telephoned and asked to collect the pupil at the earliest opportunity.

A pupil who feels sick may rest in the Sick Room, until collected by a parent or guardian, or until he/she feels well enough to return to class.  No pupil should go home without permission.  Pupils, even if acting with the best of intentions, should not telephone their parents or another child’s parents without first consulting a member of staff.

Any Sixth Year student who feels ill must not leave School without first informing his/her Head of House or a member of the Management Team.

Please Note: It is vital that no pupil leaves the School at any time without receiving proper authorisation and signing out.

Lunch
Lunch is served from 12.35.  Pupils must bring money for lunch on a daily basis.

Pupils in SI to SIV who have a packed lunch must eat it in the lunch hall.

Short Break
A selection of hot filled rolls, bagels, paninis, fresh fruit and cereal bars are available at short break from 10.10-10.25.

SI-IV Social Areas
Each year group has a designated social area within the School.  This normally doubles as a cloakroom and storage area for bags and sports equipment.   All musical instruments should be stored in the music department.

Pupils are reminded of the need to keep bags off the floor and to dispose of litter in the bins provided.  Property should not be left overnight; in particular items of food (e.g. packed lunch or dishes prepared in Home Economics) must be taken home at the end of each day.  At the discretion of the Duty Rector, pupils may have a radio/CD player, providing the noise is not excessive.

SV and SVI Common Rooms
Pupils/students may eat their lunch in their common rooms and bring in a radio/CD player.  Each pupil in SV and VI is required to pay a levy of £10, returnable at the end of the session, providing there has been no wilful damage to the fabric or property of the common room.  Pupils operate rotas for tidying the common rooms.

Playground
Each year group has access to the upper and lower playgrounds on a rota basis. The playground rota is posted on the board inside the rear door.

Football - pupils may only use a lightweight ball which can be purchased from Reception. The year group must be clearly marked in black ink on the ball.  Pupils must take every care to avoid kicking the ball so high that it goes into the street, on to the roofs or into neighbouring gardens.

On no account should pupils go on to the road, climb into any neighbouring gardens or attempt to climb on to a roof to retrieve a ball.

Astroturf
At the discretion of the Duty Rector, pupils may use the Astroturf for games during lunchtime.
