House System

SENIOR SCHOOL

Our pastoral system is vertical, comprising four Houses - named after local areas - each with a mix of pupils from First to Sixth Year.  The Head of House is the first and main point of contact for parents in their dealings with the school.

The four Houses, and Heads of House, are:

Craigmarloch - Mrs Joyce Scott, jscott@st-columbas.org

Duchal - Mrs Vicky Reilly, vreilly@st-columbas.org

Kilallan - Mrs C Miller, cmiller@st-columbas.org

Strathgryffe - Mrs Norma Smith, nsmith@st-columbas.org

Each Head of House has overall responsibility for the studies, pastoral care, discipline and involvement in school life of the pupils in his or her House.  On entering the Senior School, pupils are assigned to a House and remain in that House throughout their time at school.  Members of the same family will normally belong to the same House.

The main duties of Head of House comprise:

  • Liaison with colleagues over individual academic progress
  • Dealing with matters of pupil conduct
  • Pastoral care of pupils who may have personal concerns and worries
  • Organising events for the Inter House Competition
  • Reviewing and commenting on pupil reports
  • Providing Personal and Social Education - please click here for an overview

There are specific, additional responsibilities for each year:

  • SI: In September hold individual interviews with parents to discuss initial progress
  • SII: During Easter term advise and administer subject choices; attend Ardeonaig in June
  • SIII: In November, hold individual interviews with parents to discuss progress
  • SIV: Organise the programme of Morrisby testing, careers advice, work placements, provide advice on Higher course options
  • SV: Organise FE and Careers advice, visits from University and other external organisations
  • SVI: Provide continuing advice with careers and FE, attend Prefects’ Motivation weekends at Ardeonaig and Drymen

All pupils in each House elect a boy and girl captain from the Sixth Year.  They assist the Head of House in organising events for the inter-house competition, and in leading House Assembly.  House captains have an important job in encouraging pupils to participate in the wider life of the school, and in looking after the younger members of their particular House.

Heads of House can be contacted by phoning the School on 01505 872238 or by email.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

All children from Junior 1 upwards are allocated a House and we try to ensure that all families are kept in the same House.  We appoint house captains and vice captains and they are invited, along with class captains, to meet with Mrs Cook at least once a term to discuss areas of concern or suggestions for improvements.

We have various activities throughout the year where House points are awarded as well as for general behaviour.
