6th February 2019

This week our caterers, Inspire, are celebrating Chinese New Year in true authentic style. 2019 New Year marks the year of the pig – the twelfth of all zodiac animals and a traditional symbol of wealth and prosperity. Chinese New Year, also known as the ‘spring festival’, falls on 5th February, with an official 7-day holiday running from 4-10th February. Traditionally, on the eve of the New Year, people give red envelopes filled with ‘lucky money’ wishing them a healthy and prosperous year ahead.

Celebrating the occasion, Inspire had some visual props on display, such as fortune cookies, woks, spoons, bowls, Chinese cook books, Chinese food items and spices, and enjoyed preparing dishes such as Sweet and Sour Chicken in Bao Bun, Salt and Pepper Chicken, Hong Kong Steamed Pork Ginger and Spring Onion Balls.

All of the menus were healthily balanced in line with Inspire’s Healthy Living Award. The variety of options provided the perfect, authentic base to let the chef’s creativity shine through and allow pupils to try new dishes.

Denise Coulter, Quality and Training Manager at Inspire Catering said, “We love celebrating Chinese New Year across our sites. Yesterday, at St Columba’s School, our pupils had fun using chopsticks and thoroughly enjoyed the Pork, Ginger and Spring Onion Meatballs with Rice and Prawn Crackers. They loved the panda cookies we gave to them inside a traditional red lucky envelope. Delicious!”
