Junior 5 pupil, Mark K represented Scotland in the final of ‘Live Classics’, a Russian reading competition of international acclaim.

‘Live Classics’ is the largest children's literary contest with more than 2 million children from 84 countries taking part on an annual basis. The final, which takes place in May, is held at Artek, the prestigious children’s centre.

Given that the contest takes place during the Russian school year, participants are enrolled in a Russian school located in the centre where they study mathematics, social studies, history, English as well as Russian language. It goes without saying that they also have the opportunity to study Russian literature! Despite enjoying this unique and thrilling experience, we were delighted that Mark came back to St Columba’s after the final!

One of the many goals of the competition is bringing the school-age children closer to timeless classics and we are delighted that Mark got to the final, receiving a solid 47 points out of 50! He took third place, an excellent result.

Of his Russian literary adventure Mark said ‘I read the story ‘Mustard’ by Andrey Usachev and I think the thing I found most difficult was learning the text by heart. When I stepped onto the stage in the semi-final, I was extremely nervous but I think the judges enjoyed my performance and I am very proud of my achievement.’ Поздравляю, Mark!
