Latin
“There's no such thing as dead languages, only dormant minds.” - Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind
With almost half of all English words deriving from Latin, as well as the undeniable links with other European languages, such as French and Spanish, at St Columba’s we value the transferable skills that the study of the Latin language can provide.
Pupils in Senior I and Senior II follow a broad general introduction to the language before having the opportunity to continue to examination level.
Latin can be taken to National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.
Classical Studies
The discipline of Classical Studies allows pupils to pursue an interest in the classical world without the constraint of language.
While pupils are given a taster of the subject throughout the Senior I and Senior II course, the study of Classical Studies as a discrete subject begins in earnest at National 5. The SQA courses allow pupils to develop a well-rounded understanding of the classical world; history, politics, art, literature, social issues, and much more besides.
Classical Studies can be taken to National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.
