Junior School

ABOUT JUNIOR SCHOOL

The Junior School is housed on a spacious and leafy campus at Knockbuckle Road next to Birkmyre Park.  The older building, Shalott, is a magnificent William Leiper house, fully refurbished and modernised, and the Graham Building, which was opened in 2001, is a superb purpose-built block with flexible classroom accommodation for Junior 3 to 6.

The current school roll is just over 730 with 380 pupils in Junior School.

There are two classes of twenty-four in each year group from Junior 1 to 6.  A thorough grounding in English and Mathematics is provided; in addition the children also study Social Studies, Expressive Arts, Religion and Moral Education, Health and Well-being.  Specialist staff teach French, Music and Physical Education from Junior 1, Art from Junior 5 and Drama in Junior 4.  Each class uses interactive whiteboards and has access to laptops.

Throughout all of the Junior School we encourage communication with parents through such activities as helping on school trips and visiting the classrooms during active learning sessions.  Information Evenings are held at the beginning of the school year to allow parents the opportunity to meet the class teacher and to see the classroom.

Reports are issued twice yearly and there are two Parents’ Evenings every year.  However parents are encouraged to contact the School at any time if they wish to discuss anything.  We hold monthly coffee afternoons to which parents are invited to have the opportunity to chat to the Head and Depute of Junior School.  These are held on the last Friday of each month from 3.00-3.30pm in the Livingstone Hall.  Each year group also invites parents to attend a special assembly and then to visit the classroom.

The Infants hold a Christmas Celebration every year to which all parents are invited and the Junior Department, Junior 4-Junior 6, hold a concert very two years in which all children take part and parents have the opportunity to enjoy.

All of the children are known individually and great care is taken to build up relationships between home and school.
