Junior School

Junior 4 - Junior 6

At these stages we are building on the skills learned in the Infant Department and children continue to be encouraged to take an active part in their own learning. There is a clear understanding of how children learn and this informs all learning and teaching. The skills in the literacy and numeracy curriculum are developed, ensuring that the more able children are stretched to reach their potential. Our Support for Learning department provides support for children who are experiencing specific difficulties.

At this stage in the School, in addition to French, Music and PE, children also have access to specialist Expressive Arts teachers, with Drama being taught in Junior 4 and Art in Junior 5 and 6.

Personal and Social Development is taught as a separate subject with children being encouraged to develop life skills such as coping with change, dealing with conflict and peer pressure.

As in the Infant Department, children are actively involved in their own learning and opportunities are provided for them to take this outside of the classroom. Visits are enjoyed in a variety of venues such as Burns Cottage, Clydebuilt and the Hunterian Museum. Junior 6 have a residential visit to Newlands Valley in the Lake District where they enjoy the challenges of an outward bound course.
