Languages

In a world where international contacts are increasingly vital and where global communication is ever easier, the importance of being able to speak other languages and understand different cultures is paramount.

In the Senior School we teach French, German and Spanish. All pupils are introduced to Latin in Senior I and II which gives a good foundation for further language learning.  Pupils attending our Junior School have already developed a foundation in French and German and can choose which of these to study to Standard Grade.

A large number of pupils pursue a language to Higher and several opt for Advanced Higher. If pupils wish to take up a second language, they can start learning Spanish in SIII. We also offer a crash Higher Spanish course in Senior VI to those pupils who already have a good Higher qualification in another language.

The emphasis in language learning is on speaking, as the ability to communicate orally will be of most benefit to pupils. However, at all levels, we underpin this with solid learning of grammar and vocabulary, and we develop the skills of listening, reading and writing at all stages of the curriculum. Language learning is put into context by a number of cultural visits to France, Germany, Spain and Italy as well as outings to see foreign films and plays. We have a link with a school in northern France and pupils exchange letters with the young students there and all pupils learning German have a pen-pal in Germany.
