Generations of Giving
St Columba’s is undoubtedly one of the top performing schools in Scotland. A recent HMIe report described our pupils as ‘confident, articulate and well-motivated children’ and ‘young people who enjoy high quality teaching experiences’. The quality of education that St Columba’s is able to offer its pupils today has been made possible by the generosity of former pupils, parents, staff, governors and friends of the School from previous generations.
As a former girls’ school, St Columba’s does not have the endowment funds of some of the schools founded for boys. Although the School is in good financial health, our fee income alone will not on its own be able to address the long term capital needs of the School.
Ongoing support from the entire School community is crucial to ensure that St Columba’s continues to flourish and offer a first class education to both current and future generations.
With this in mind we would like to ask everyone from our School community to consider making a gift in their Will to St Columba’s to help extend the scope of our financial assistance scheme and to provide improved facilities.
Leaving a Legacy – a truly fulfilling gift
Making a Will is an intensely personal matter and naturally your first consideration will be to make proper provision for your family and friends in the most tax-efficient way possible. Many people also leave a gift to one or more charities. Leaving a legacy to the School, which is a recognised charity, is one of the greatest gifts we can receive and will make a real difference to the lives of the pupils at St Columba’s. Legacy giving may also have tax benefits for you by reducing the amount liable to inheritance tax.
Types of Legacy
Pecuniary legacy - a specified sum of money.
Residuary legacy - the residue or a percentage of the residue of your estate after your specific bequests have been made.
Specific legacy - a specific asset or personal possession, such as property, antiques, jewellery, works of art or stocks and shares.
A legacy is simple to arrange, either at the time when you make your Will or, if you already have one, by adding a Codicil.

1897 Society
Any person indicating that they intend to leave a gift to the School in their Will is automatically awarded membership of the 1897 Society as a token of our gratitude and will be invited to attend School events and private functions. However, we recognise that a decision to leave a gift is a private matter, so donors can choose to remain anonymous.
Thank you for giving St Columba’s School your consideration.
