From Duchal Road to the House of Lords

The St Columba’s community sends their warmest congratulations to our Honorary President Eleanor Laing DBE, PC (Class of 1976) who has been awarded a peerage in Rishi Sunak’s Dissolution Honours List and will now take her place in the House of Lords.

The Right Honourable Baroness Laing of Elderslie DBE, PC, as she will now be known, served as the Member of Parliament for Epping Forest from 1997 to 2024, stepping down from the House of Commons ahead of the recent general election. She is one of the longest-serving female MPs in British history.

Most notably, Baroness Laing was the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons from 2013 to 2024 – one of the longest tenures in the Speakers’ Chair. She was also the first woman to be the Chairman of Ways and Means.
