Excitement was in the air on Friday 14th March as the St Columba’s 1st XI secured a resounding victory in the Senior Girls Challenge Plate final with a dominant 4-0 win over Earlston High School at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
The match started at a high tempo, with both teams showing determination and skill; however, it was our 1st XI who broke the deadlock from a penalty corner. After an initial strike from Ava H (SIV) was blocked, Emma V (SVI) reacted quickly to fire it into the net for the opening goal.
St Columba’s doubled their lead shortly after, once again capitalising on a penalty corner. This time, Ava found the target with a well-placed scooped effort that sailed past the Earlston goalkeeper.
The second half saw the team continue their attacking momentum, applying relentless pressure on Earlston. Their persistence paid off when Ava drove in from the left and calmly slotted a low shot home, making it 3-0.
The final goal came soon after, as Esther W (SV) confidently stepped up to take a penalty stroke and sent the ball into the bottom right corner, sealing a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
This impressive performance highlights the skill and determination of the St Columba’s squad, and the team can take great pride in their achievement.
Adding to the excitement of the day, the team were cheered on by around 100 St Columba’s supporters, primarily made up of pupils involved in the Hockey programme. Our sincere thanks must go to FirstPoint USA, not only for their sponsorship of the 1st XI this season, but also for covering the cost of two coaches. This very generous contribution allowed younger year groups to show their support of the team and be inspired to keep working hard on their own hockey development.
Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff on a fantastic result!
