Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

Statistically, 1 in 4 people living in the UK will struggle with their mental health in any given year. With rising rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges among pupils, schools must go beyond traditional academic instruction to support the whole child. One proactive step St Columba’s has been implementing for the last few years is mandatory Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for all staff. SVI pupils are also given the opportunity to complete this training and take on the role of Mental Health Ambassador (MHA).

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Just as emergency first aid provides immediate support before professional medical treatment is available, MHFA equips people with the tools to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis or showing early signs that they are struggling.

We are lucky to have two NUCO-qualified MHFA instructors on staff – Mr Houston and Mrs Ingham – who lead our MHFA sessions and provide training that is uniquely tailored to the needs of our staff and pupils.

Why Do Schools Need Mental Health First Aid?

  1. Early Intervention Saves Lives
According to the World Health Organization, half of all mental health conditions begin by age 14. Teachers and school staff are on the front lines—they see pupils daily and can often detect changes in behaviour or mood. MHFA training enables them to act early, potentially preventing more serious problems later.
  • Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment
When teachers, support staff, and pupils understand mental health, stigma diminishes. MHFA fosters empathy, encourages open conversations, and promotes a culture where seeking help is seen as a strength rather than a weakness.
  • Empowering Staff and Pupils
Mental Health First Aid training provides practical strategies and confidence to support peers in distress. MHFA teaches how to approach someone, listen without judgment, offer reassurance, and guide them to appropriate professional help. This empowerment can turn bystanders into active supporters.
  • Supporting Academic Success
Mental health and academic performance are deeply connected. Pupils struggling with unaddressed emotional issues may struggle with their concentration, motivation, and attendance. By integrating MHFA, schools can better support pupils’ overall success, both emotionally and academically.
  • Building Resilient Communities
Schools play a critical role in shaping the next generation. By teaching mental health awareness and first aid, St Columba’s is nurturing more compassionate, resilient individuals who are equipped to take care of themselves and others – skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

At St Columba’s, we believe that investing in Mental Health First Aid is not just a preventative measure – it’s a necessity. By prioritising mental health, we are not only better equipped to handle crises, but we are also fostering an environment where every member of our community feels seen, supported, and valued.
