Women & Girls in Sport Week: Lauren (Gymnastics)

To celebrate Scottish Women & Girls in Sport Week 2025, Mr Reid our Director of Sport asked five of our up-and-coming female athletes to talk about their sporting journey so far, why they feel sport is important to them and what advice they would pass on to younger pupils.

First up is gymnast Lauren N (SIII):

What is the highest level you’ve competed at for gymnastics?
The highest level I have competed at is Scottish Gymnastics National Competitions, Regional Grade 4 and Bronze award.

What do you like most about gymnastics?
I love doing gymnastics because I get to push myself at every training session, working on my strength and flexibility, whilst achieving new skills. I also love gymnastics as it has taught me to be very resilient and determined as it is a really tough individual sport!

What do you like about sport in general?
In general I like how there is so much variety in sport, and there’s something for everyone! Sport has had and continues to have a big impact on my life and helps my emotional and physical health.

Why do you feel sport is important for girls?
I feel that sport is important for girls as it makes us feel included and valued. It empowers girls to feel strong, confident and healthy!

What is your favourite sport away from gymnastics?
I enjoy playing hockey through the school because I get to experience a team sport unlike gymnastics where you compete as an individual. I also enjoy running and athletics during the summer term because I get to be outside and with my friends!

Who is your sporting idol?
My sporting idol is Suni Lee (American Artistic Gymnast). She inspires me because of the struggles she has had to overcome and her skill in gymnastics. She has won several medals and is a two time Olympian; she is a great role model.

What is one piece of advice you would give to younger pupils?
Believe in yourself. When believing in yourself, you can achieve great things!

Thanks, Lauren! We look forward to following your gymnastics journey as it progresses!
