To celebrate Scottish Women & Girls in Sport Week 2025, Mr Reid our Director of Sport asked five of our up-and-coming female athletes to talk about their sporting journey so far, why they feel sport is important to them and what advice they would pass on to younger pupils.
Today is the turn of Ella D (SV) who has been playing netball since the age of 5. Not only has she played for the School, she has also played at District level and in 2024 was selected to play for Netball Scotland.
What is the highest level you’ve competed at in netball?
I have played at a national level, including the Scottish Super Cup.
What do you like about sport in general?
I love sport as it creates competition for you to not only strive to be the best against others but progress yourself. Not only this, but you can create so many connections with other people throughout.
Why do you feel sport is important for girls?
I feel sport is very important for women of all ages due to its benefits physically and mentally.
What is your favourite sport away from gymnastics?
My favourite sport away from netball would be rugby.
Who is your sporting idol?
My sporting idol would most likely be Helen Housby (English netball player).
What is one piece of advice you would give to younger pupils?
My advice for anyone wanting to pursue sport would be to have a goal. Even if it is small, work at it, achieve it and aim higher. Don’t stop just because something doesn’t work out the first time, use it to your advantage and try again.
Wise words, Ella! Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.
