To celebrate Scottish Women & Girls in Sport Week 2025, Mr Reid our Director of Sport asked five of our up-and-coming female athletes to talk about their sporting journey so far, why they feel sport is important to them and what advice they would pass on to younger pupils.
Today we speak to Charli W (SV), a pentathlete who is also the reigning St Columba’s School Senior Girls’ Sports Champion.
What is the highest level you’ve competed at in athletics?
The highest levels I have competed at include Scottish National Athletics League 2025, Scottish Athletics National Indoor Open Series, Scottish Schools Pentathlon Championships and West District Track and Field Championships. I compete in pentathalons (sprint hurdles, high jump, long jump, 800m and shot put), and single events including hurdles, long jump, high jump, 800m, sprints etc.
What do you like about athletics?
The thing I most like about athletics is the variety. As I compete in pentathalons, there’s something for everyone. I also really appreciate the community and friends I have made from joining, as well as the opportunities that come with competing. For example, I got the opportunity to apply to the Scottish Athletics assistant coaching course, which I am currently completing.
What do you like about sport in general?
In general, I like the stress relief that I get from sports, especially around exam time. It allows me to take a break away from my studies and gives me energy and refreshment. As well as this, I like the discipline skills I have learned that I wouldn’t have if it weren’t for athletics.
Why do you feel sport is important for girls?
Sports are really important for girls to get involved in because they build confidence, improve health, create friendships, breakdown stereotypes and show that girls can be strong, skilled, and successful.
What is your favourite sport away from athletics?
My favourite sport away from athletics is cycling, as well as mountain biking
How is your sporting idol?
My sporting idol – is Eliud Kipchoge. He is a Kenyan long-distance runner, a 2-time Olympic marathon champion and a previous world record holder. I look up to him as he firmly believes in self-belief and even with all his achievements, he still has commitment to keeping his simple lifestyle.
What is one piece of advice you would give to younger pupils?
Don’t be afraid to take up space, try new things, and keep going even when it feels tough. Sport is about learning and growing!
Thank you, Charli! What an excellent piece of advice – something that we can all learn from!
