Introducing the Numeracy Hub

Supporting Numeracy Across the Curriculum

We believe that numeracy is not just a skill for mathematics lessons – it is a vital life skill that supports learning, problem-solving, and decision-making across every subject. When we help our pupils to develop confidence with numbers, patterns, and logical thinking, we are ensuring that they are better equipped to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Numeracy is more than simply being able to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. It’s the ability to apply mathematical understanding to real-world situations, such as interpreting data, managing time, estimating quantities, or understanding patterns and relationships. Whether students are analysing statistics in Geography, measuring materials in Design & Manufacture, or exploring rhythm in Music, numeracy plays a crucial role.

This is why the Numeracy Committee have developed an incredible new Numeracy Hub, which is available to parents, pupils and teachers on Firefly. Packed full of resources and tutorials, as well as a Helpdesk, the Hub is a one-stop-shop for all things Numeracy-related at St Columba’s. Whether it’s a pupil brushing up on percentages, a parent looking for homework help, or a teacher embedding numeracy into their lessons, they’ll find everything they need in the hub!

For the teachers at St Columba’s, supporting numeracy across the curriculum means helping pupils to make meaningful connections between subjects. This then encourages them to see Maths as relevant, practical, and accessible. For example:

  • Biology, Chemistry and Physics rely on measurement, data analysis, and interpreting results.
  • Design & Manufacture uses ratio, scale, and estimation.
  • Geography involves map reading, scale, and population statistics.
  • Physical Education includes timing, scoring, and performance data.
  • Art explores symmetry, ratio and proportion.

Our teachers embed numeracy into their lessons, allowing pupils the opportunity to strengthen their understanding and develop the confidence to use these skills independently.

Many young people (and adults) experience “maths anxiety,” often caused by the misconception that maths is only for those who are “naturally good at it.” By integrating numeracy into all subjects, we help pupils see that mathematical thinking is for everyone. It becomes part of everyday learning rather than a separate, intimidating challenge.

Through consistent reinforcement, pupils gain confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude toward problem-solving – qualities that benefit them well beyond the classroom.

Numeracy is most effective when it’s a shared responsibility. Teachers, parents, and pupils all play an important role and this is why the Numeracy Hub is designed not just for pupils but for parents and teachers too. Our staff are committed to highlighting numeracy opportunities in every subject area, using consistent language, and modelling practical applications. One way that the Numeracy Hub is helping in this area is through the use of Numeracy Nudges. These are quick QR code prompts that teachers can embed into lessons, homework, and classroom activities to allow pupils to access extra help using consistent methods across the School.

Strong numeracy skills are essential for higher education, employment, and everyday life. Employers consistently highlight problem-solving, logical reasoning, and data literacy as key attributes. By promoting numeracy across the curriculum, we are preparing our pupils not only for exams, but for success in life.

In short: At St Columba’s, numeracy is everyone’s business. By using our Numeracy Hub to nurture mathematical confidence across all areas of learning, we are empowering our pupils to think critically, solve problems creatively, and face the future with confidence.
