St Columba’s Partners with Nuru UK

On Monday morning at Senior School assembly, Ruby T and Charlie D (both SVI) officially launched an exciting partnership with Nuru UK, a charitable organisation established to raise funds and awareness in support of the Superior Homes Foundation in Nairobi, Kenya.

This partnership aligns with our values of compassion, integrity and aspiration and provides the opportunity to raise awareness and support the Foundation in empowering young girls to achieve their educational potential. As patrons of the charity, we look forward to strengthening our pupils’ understanding of global responsibility.

You can read Ruby and Charlie’s speech below:

We are very fortunate that at St Columba’s we come to school every day with access to classrooms, teachers, resources, and opportunities that allow us to develop our interests and think about our futures. But around the world, that isn’t always the case. For many girls globally, education can be disrupted or limited by challenges that make it much harder to access the same opportunities.

Because of this, we’re really proud to announce that we are beginning a partnership with Nuru UK, which is a UK-based charity that supports the work of the Superior Homes Foundation in Kenya.

The Superior Homes Foundation runs programmes in communities across Kenya focused on education, mentorship, youth empowerment, and community development. Their work aims to support young people, particularly girls, by providing guidance, resources, and support networks that help them access and benefit from education.

Through these programmes, the foundation currently supports over 22,000 girls across more than 70 schools in Kenya, helping create opportunities that can have a lasting impact on their futures and their communities.

As part of this partnership, St Columba’s will act as a UK patron institution for Nuru UK. Over time, this could involve different ways for our school community to engage with the charity, whether through fundraising initiatives, awareness campaigns, student-led projects, or learning more about the work being done in Kenya and the challenges young people face globally.

Announcing this today, the day after International Women’s Day, feels especially fitting. International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women and girls, but it also reminds us that equal access to opportunity, particularly education, is still something many girls around the world are working towards.
