If you’ve walked past our campus recently or noticed our social media profile pictures, you will have seen a bright, colourful addition to our school logo and our flagpole. Throughout June, we proudly display the Pride flag, and we wanted to share why we mark this month and what these colours symbolise for our school community.
A Celebration of Belonging and Community
At its heart, celebrating Pride Month aligns with our core mission: to ensure every single pupil, staff member, and family feels safe, valued, and respected.
School is a place for learning, growth, and community. For young people to achieve their potential, they first need to know they belong. By recognising Pride Month, we are sending a clear, positive message to our LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and more) pupils and allies that our school is a supportive environment where they can be themselves.
Education is about preparing pupils for a diverse world. By championing an environment of empathy, kindness, and inclusion, we are aiming to help our pupils grow into thoughtful, global citizens.
What the Flag Means
The Pride flag is one of the most recognisable symbols in the world, but many people don’t know that each colour was chosen to represent a specific, positive concept for human thriving.
The original flag was designed in 1978 by artist and activist Gilbert Baker. Here is what the classic six colours represent:

You might also see our school using the Progress Pride Flag, which adds black and brown stripes to represent LGBTQ+ people of colour, and pink, light blue, and white stripes to include the transgender community. These additions remind us that inclusion works best when it leaves absolutely no one behind.
Marking Pride Month is an opportunity to teach the history of civil rights, practice kindness, and celebrate the diverse tapestry of the community we serve.
