A number of National 5 Art & Design pupils recently took part in the 2023 Rotary Young Photographer competition organised by the Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley. The theme of this year's competition is The Beauty of Architecture.

Many of the photographs were taken during a National 5 field trip to the West End of Glasgow, wherein pupils gathered hundreds of images for use in their Expressive folio exploring The Built Environment.

They were then able to chose one of their photos to submit for consideration.

Sofia McM (SIV) was declared the winner, with the judges praising the "beautiful composition from a low angle..." They also felt that the photo was enhanced by "the person being in the right place, and looking at the building..."

Mila L (SIII) was Runner Up with her photo of Sicilian Avenue in London, with Hannah G (SIV) and Lily N (SIV) being Highly Commended.

The judges felt that Mila's photograph should "lots of detail" and that the tree in the top right corner "fills the sky in nicely". Of Hannah's composition, they said that it "captures several interesting features of the building. Meanwhile, they praised Lily's "nicely cropped" image which avoided showing the cars parked on the street.

Sofia's image will now progress to the Regional level of the competition - we wish her every success.
