We were delighted to learn recently that St Columba's has been awarded the Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools Gold Award.

This award has been designed to encourage outdoor learning and inspire pupils to learn more about and interact with trees, woods, and wildlife. Schools earn points for completing environmental projects and activities, allowing them to progress through bronze, silver, and gold levels.

St Columba's have been awarded this for the cumulative work that has taken place in the school over the last few years both in improving our green spaces and in developing pupil understanding on the environment.

Activities that we have undertaken include:

  • The planting of trees and the development of school grounds by the Gardening Club,
  • The creation of eco awareness posters and information campaigns, along with the encouraging of recycling, by the Eco and Sustainability group,
  • The combined John Muir Award work that Transitus do during Activities Week - visiting woodland and areas of nature, creating verse and images about woodlands and nature, as well as showing understanding about issues surrounding local history and culture.

This is a fantastic achievement, and we thank everyone involved for all of their hard work in developing the environmental life of the School.
