Our PE department and friends are taking on the 5 ferries challenge for charity YoungMinds

On Friday the 14th of August our St Columba’s PE department and their friends are taking on the Five Ferries Challenge!

Organised by Mrs Bellew, the team were to originally set to attempt the challenge in may, however lockdown restrictions prevented them from using the ferries.

The team of cyclists will cover a route that sees them travel over 70 miles, using five different ferries to help them hop between the islands and peninsulas in the west of Scotland!

The courageous cycling team are using their challenge to help raise money for the mental health charity YoungMinds. The charity focuses on providing young people with mental health support and helps to provide resources and training for adults and professionals. You can read more about the charity here.

It is well known that exercise, outdoor activity and undertaking an adventure or challenge can have a huge positive impact on our mental health. The group hope that their journey will also encourage others to enjoy the wonderful environment we are surrounded by and to reap the benefits that the outdoors can provide for improving mental health.

As we cannot all be there to cheer them on at the start line, we would like to ask our St Columba’s community to help this excellent cause by making donations to the groups JustGiving page.

Keep an eye on the school page as we will be posting live updates on Friday!

UPDATE: We have our first update today from our team who are cycling the five ferries challenge. We are so pleased to hear that our St Columba’s community are helping them along their journey.

The group arrived in Brodick this morning, completing one of their five ferry journeys. The cyclists were then unexpectedly met by Mr Wilson (Grandfather of St Columba’s pupils Kirsty and Ewan S) who kindly helped transport their bags to Lochranza and brought them sandwiches for the trip! They were also cheered on by a school family at Brodick.

We are pleased to see them all sporting bright yellow jerseys for the charity young minds, hopefully it means they will be easy to spot during their exhausting journey!
