The Under-16 rugby team have quietly gone about their winning ways to progress to the last sixteen of the Scottish Cup and have a home tie against Strathallan School in late October.

To date, the Under-16 team have beaten Cumnock Academy 55-5 in round 1, the second tie was played against Hutchesons’ Grammar on a heavy pitch in some very long grass at Birkmyre Park. St Columba’s progressed due to a higher try count of two to one. Spectators would note the Under-16 had a couple of key players absent due to injury yet won the first half in fine style. The second half was a tense affair with some minor injuries sustained and numerous penalties conceded. Thankfully, the team rallied and finished strongly to win the match.

Last Thursday the team progressed once more after winning against Robert Gordon’s College from Aberdeen. Not surprisingly this home match was moved to the all-weather pitch at Lochinch in Glasgow at short notice due to the underfoot conditions at Birkmyre Park. The score line of 34-10 was a testament to an excellent team performance in some very wet and windy conditions. Although Robert Gordon’s were a bigger side they were somewhat surprised with St Columba’s intensity at the breakdown and general ability to disrupt the opposition.

The next game against Strathallan will certainly be a challenge, but if tackles are made and teamwork is to the fore, who knows how far the team will go.
