19th September 2017

All were warmly welcomed to Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm, on the afternoon of 16th September to celebrate St Columba’s School’s Late Summer Fete. This entirely charitable event saw stalls run by The Rotary Club, Kilmacolm Playgroup and Toddlers, Kilmacolm Amateur Dramatics Society, Ardgowan Hospice, Girl Guides and Inverclyde Carers.

Despite the West Coast weather, crowds gathered to help raise money for a range of different charities including Cancer Research and Glasgow Disabled Scouts.

Activities on offer were innovative and pupil led. Highlights included ‘Pooches in the Park’, a mini ‘Crufts’ event that saw owners enter their ‘pooches’ in different rounds including ‘best lookalike’ and ‘waggiest tail’. Parents took on their offspring in a family rounders match and pupils from across St Columba’s School ran their own stalls in an ‘Apprentice-style’ head-to-head fundraising competition. Infants were delighted by the appearance of ‘Bookbug’, the increasingly popular Scottish Booktrust character, and enjoyed an (albeit soggy) afternoon of arts and crafts.

The highlight of the event was St Columba’s Pipe Band who awed the parents, pupils and local residents with their precision and passion. And as the final notes sounded, the clouds seem to part and the sun shone, almost as if to mark the close of this wonderful community event.

Ian Downie, Chair of the Parents' Association said, “Thanks to everyone who came along - it was fantastic to see such a great turn out and the community come together despite the weather. We had a great time and we hope you did too. Congratulations to ‘The Melvins’ who won the Treasure Hunt with a perfect 20/20 score. We hope they enjoy spending their £50 voucher at Cairn-Kilmacolm.
