Ally McCoist MBE presented the children with their awards

Junior Dukes Platinum Award 2019

National treasure Alistair (Ally) McCoist MBE attended a lunch in school last week in his role as Junior Duke Award Patron. The lunch was given in honour of the 16 Transitus pupils who achieved their Platinum Award. This is the second year St Columba’s pupils have taken part in the Junior Dukes programme and we are pleased that pupils have the opportunity to take part in citizenship programmes from Junior 2 to Senior 6 (D of E).

Mr McCoist and the Rector were joined by Mr Campbell, Mme Manceau, Mrs Hall and Mr McKay. These four inspirational teachers have been instrumental in guiding their pupils through their award, giving them much needed advice and encouragement along the way. Mr McCoist was thrilled to address pupils saying ‘I really did not know what to expect but everyone’s efforts have far exceeded my expectations! You have all shown what you’re capable of and you have set the bar very high for pupils embarking on the Junior Duke programme next session. Your teachers and parents are very proud of you, as am I, but what matters most is that you are proud of yourselves.

Looking at your journals, I have seen the work you have done in the community – from beach cleans to contacting your local councillor about overflowing bins not to mention the many new skills you have acquired. For those of you who undertook the cooking challenge, my only complaint would be that you didn’t let me try your delicious soups and stews! Well done to everyone who took part - it is safe to say that the world is a better place thanks to you!’

The Rector and Mr Campbell also spoke, congratulating everyone on their tenacity. The Rector said ‘I am hugely proud of these inspiring pupils and see them as excellent role models for all Columbans, and not only those undertaking their Mini and Junior Dukes Awards. The Platinum Award recipients embarked on their challenges with enduring enthusiasm. Remembering Transitus at Locherbie Manor back in 2018, I am astounded by their personal growth. They are a group of independent, motivated citizens, of whom we can all be proud.’

Further information on the Dukes Programme

The Mini and Junior Duke Awards are a pre-cursor to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Children from P2 to P6 opt in to this scheme (Mini Duke Silver and Gold – P2 and P3 respectively and Junior Duke Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum – P4, P5, P6 and Transitus).

The Platinum Award involved completing 7 of 10 possible components which might include:

Art/Craft: keep a sketch book for a period of 3 months using a variety of drawing materials.

First Aid: know how to spot the signs of a suspected heart attack; know when to use CPR and show how to perform it properly and memorise two mobile numbers in case of emergency.

Caring for Others: look around the community for something that needs to be improved and propose a plan something about it; pupils should involve themselves actively in the community once a week for a month or on four hour-long sessions – over and above what they already do.

Interest: bring in a casserole, stew or soup that you have cooked at home together with photographic evidence, a recipe and method as well as a sample for everyone to try.
