Congratulations to Sophie H in SIII, who has been selected to join the scottish team for the WSDC.

Sophie H in Senior III has recently been selected as part of Team Scotland to compete at the World Schools Debating Championships.  After several trials Sophie successfully gained a place on the team and will be one of the youngest members to compete this summer.

The World Schools Debating Championships are an annual English language debating tournament for high school level teams representing different nations. Scotland has competed in the tournament for many years, however, has not won the championship since 2012. Hopefully with Sophie’s help, the 2021 team will be able to bring home the trophy again!

International debating competitions such as WSDC give pupils the opportunity to hear a variety of views from across the world. With Teams from nations outside the UK giving an insight in the external perception of events such as Brexit and the recent elections.

Many pupils feel the Championships positively encourage their interests into international relations and politics. Motions during the 2020 debate included topics such as the use of computer algorithms for criminal sentencing, or legalising drugs in specific city areas, we can only hope that Sophie has ample opportunity to debate on an equally exciting variety of topics.

Congratulations Sophie we look forward to hearing about your adventures at the World championships this summer.
