June is always a busy month for the PE Department. Here are some of the highlights this year.

The Summer Term is always busy in the PE Department, so here is a round up of all the goings on, as well as highlighting the significant successes of individual pupils across a range of sports.

Sports Day

On the morning of the 7th June, we bussed the whole of Senior School down to the On-x in Linwood for our annual Senior School Sports Day.

Many thanks to to all the PE staff for organising a wonderful event and for the help and support of parents and teaching staff alike who helped to make it such a success. It really was a joy to see Senior School Sports Days return post-Covid.

Congratulations to Duchal for being the winning house and, of course, to the Individual Athletics Champions listed below:

Transitus: Eilidh T and Finlay M

SI: Eve M and Fintan R

SII: Rebecca R and Freddie MacF

SIII: Abbie H and Kruze L

Senior: Alistair C and Tess MacM

Athletics

In Athletics news, there were a number of fixtures and events in June and it was so pleasing to see over 50 pupils represent the School in the Hutchesons' 5 School fixture.

This then led on to the Inverclyde District Athletics in June in which we had a huge amount of success.

Our medalists were as follows:

SI:

Fintan R, Lauren McA, Tanith MacL, Tara H, Ella D, Eve M, Emma C, Charli W, Logan M, Ava H and Carrick T.

SII:

Rebecca R, Charlie B, Freddie MacF, Leo H, Oliver M and Amelia C.

SIII:

Kirsty W, Harry B, Matilda C, Kruze L, Rachael C and Abbie H.

Freddie MacF was also awarded the “Performance of the Day” Award receiving the Diodes Inc Shield for his 100m run.

We then had 5 pupils competing in the Scottish Schools Track and Field event at Grangemouth.

- Eve M (SI) came 5th in her 1500m heat and

- Charlie B (SII) narrowly missed out on a medal coming 4th in the 200m; however he achieved a Scottish Athletics Badge Standard time in this final.

- Freddie MacF (SII) also came 4th in the Long Jump, missing out by just 1cm; however he then went on to finish 3rd overall in the 100m, also achieving a Badge Standard time.

- Oliver P (SIV) came 2nd in the 1500m final and in doing so qualified to represent Scottish Schools in an International Track and Field event in July.

- Ryan R (SVI) gained a bronze medal in the Discus in horrific conditions.

- Fintan R (SI) competed in the Pentathlon Championships, achieving 3rd place overall.

Huge further congratulations to Oliver P as he was recently been selected to compete for Great Britain U18’s at the European Championships this July in Jerusalem in the 2km Steeplechase. Oliver reached the final in his event - an outstanding achievement given that he first tried Steeplechase only three months ago.

Congratulations also go to Charlie B, who was competing for Scotland in the Junior Home International Tetrathlon competition and came first overall in his age group (12-15 years).

Golf

Mrs McGlennon took a group of 13 pupils to compete in the ESMS Golf Competition at Murrayfield Golf Club where our pupils competed in a variety of events including 18-hole, 9-hole and putting competitions. Ruby T (SII) was runner up in the U15 girls’ competition and Ben L (SI) was the joint winner of the putting competition.

Inverclyde Warrior

We were also lucky enough to be invited to take part in the Inverclyde Warrior Schools’ event at Battery Park, as part of the Meliora festival. It was absolutely brilliant to see over 50 pupils from SI – SV put themselves forward for this event and enjoy something a little bit different! The competing pupils had a great time running in this event and it was pleasing to see them do so.

Tennis

This final week of term, we held year group tennis tournaments for those wishing to enter. Congratulations to the following 2022 Champions:

Transitus – Finlay M

SI – Anastazja MacI

SII – Ruby T

Senior – Sophie R

Football

We were also delighted to hear the good news that Max N (SV) was named Linwood Rangers (2005s) Player of the Year at their presentation evening.

Max is a very keen footballer and it is fantastic to see his contribution to his team rewarded in this way.

It has been so good to see our young people getting back to more normality after such a difficult previous year, and it has been fantastic to see so many pupils take part, both in PE classes, as well as representing the School in a variety of different sports.
