Last Tuesday, St Columba’s School hosted the first round of the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition.

The Rotary Youth Speaks Competition is a well-established competition organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland.  It is a four-stage competition which is designed to support and encourage the development of effective communication skills.

This competition aims to offer young people the opportunity to research and craft a speech on a topic of choice, the opportunity to learn and practise high standards of expression, presentation and appearance and impartial feedback and assessment of performance by experienced adjudicators.

This year we put forward two Senior teams. Mark Clelland, Elliot Nixon and Bronte Marritt spoke about our increasing sensitivity to language. Poppy Pitts, Matt Makin and Daniel Hampsey presented the pros and cons of a vegan lifestyle. Our intermediate team spoke on fast fashion and the need to “make do and mend”. The speakers included Emma Ventham, Orla O’Rourke and Kierandeep Nijjer. Our intermediate team will now go through to the District finals, which will be held on 26th January at Caledonian University, Glasgow. Mark Clelland, Elliot Nixon and Bronte Marritt will go through to the Senior District Final, scheduled to take place 9th February.

Congratulations to all the participants for their valiant efforts.
