On Wednesday 4th December ‘Between the Lines’ Theatre Company took part in the Shakespeare’s School Festival. A cast of 35 pupils from Transitus to SVI performed an abridged version of ‘The Tempest’ at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow, alongside three other local schools.

Sophie Hannigan delivered a commanding performance as Prospero orchestrating Cara Ewing Mackie, Hilary Ewing Mackie and Oral O’Rourke as the impish Aerial. Lara Nolte, Abigail Sandham and Lottie Higgins played the monster Caliban with conviction. Through movement and voice they presented the oppressed and deformed creature. Hannah McCarey and Zoe Sayers gave touching performances as they depicted the central love story between Ferdinand and Miranda. They were supported by a cast of mariners, washed up on the island. The audience were engaged by the plotting of Emma Ventham and Amber Martin as Sebastian and Antonio and the drunken antics of Arabella Gheur and Sorcha Kelly as Stephano and Trinculo.

The whole production was brought to life, however, by a committed and energetic ensemble of Transitus and SI pupils who became an extension of the magical island echoing the words and actions of Prospero and Aerial.

For many, this was a stage debut and the majestic venue and energy and enthusiasm of the cast, created an unforgettable performance.

We can’t wait to see what ‘Between the Lines’ gets up to next.
