On Monday evening St Columba’s biennial Musical Celebration did not disappoint, with the audience enjoying a vast array of performances from pupils throughout the school – from Junior 4 upwards.

The scene was set with a lively Percussion Ensemble piece, ‘Moto Moto’. Some choral highlights included Junior 4/5 Choir’s gentle rendition of ‘Child In A Manger Born’, Rutter’s ‘What Sweeter Music?’, sung beautifully by the Senior Girls’ Choir and Senior Choir’s performance of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’. The Jazz Band version of ‘Jingle Bells’ delighted the audience, showing off the abilities of select individuals with some solo spots.

Confident playing was also displayed by smaller ensembles, such as the Clarinet Ensemble, led by Isla M (SVI), who also performed a solo, the Flute and Clarinet Ensembles, Woodwind Trio and a vocal duet involving Sarah Sandground and Emily Phillips, both in Senior VI. The orchestra gave a spectacular recital of Tchaikovsky’s ‘3-Minute Nutcracker’, showcasing the highest standards of instrumental performance. Meanwhile, the Pipe Band performed a lively Scottish medley with a festive twist.

The whole concert culminated in the joined forces of the orchestra, Pipe Band members and Junior and Senior School singers for a community carol, ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, followed by a cheerful ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’.

The Music Department would like to thank all pupils involved for their hard work and dedication over the last number of months, without which this event would not have been possible.

It was a magical evening – thank you to everyone who attended!
