The SIV Sustainability Club today declared a Climate Emergency on behalf of St Columba’s School. The group led a whole school assembly on the problem of Climate Change and the need for Sustainability and asked pupils and staff to sign their school pledge. This pledge, created by the pupils in the club, asks everyone in the school community to try to undertake 5 steps to help us as a school to reduce our carbon footprint, to improve our sustainability and to take steps to address the Climate Emergency. The club, led by Mr Arbuckle, have been very active since their creation in August. They have completed an environmental audit and review of the school for Eco Schools, are looking at ways to improve recycling, are organising tree planting through the Woodlands Trust, having already achieved a Bronze Green Tree Award for the school, and have been looking at ways that the school can develop its recycling and energy efficiency. They have also organized a ‘wear something blue with your uniform’ day this Friday to raise funds to help UNICEF improve the lives of children facing the dangers of climate change and will be undertaking a Climate Literacy day next Tuesday.
