Emily P has worked with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and 22 other young musicians during lockdown.

Lockdown will be remembered for many things, notably the amount of local music talent we have been able to enjoy.

Recent St Columba’s pupils, Emily P (Music Prefect and SVI), has been collaborating with 22 young musicians from all over Scotland. As part of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s annual work experience programme, the young musicians have been collaborating with American Composer Nathan Hall.

The result of their collaborative work is a composition called Going Places, which premiered in the evening of the 16th of June via the RSNO’s YouTube and Facebook channels.

As well as composing music, Emily had the opportunity to gain experience in marketing and press activity, working on a social media and marketing campaign with the support of RSNO staff.

Emily commented on her experience adding,  ‘It has been a great way to meet other young musicians. As a group, we created the visual content as well as composing the music either by notation or graphic score.'

'As everything was transferred to online, this presented us with some challenges as we had to adapt to a whole new way of working! We managed to overcome this quickly though and the project was a brilliant experience in which we experimented with new ways of making music and built on technological and compositional skills.'

As part of the SVI class of 2019/20,  Emily unfortunately leaves us at the end of this academic year,  but we cannot wait to hear of the adventures that await in her next exciting chapter of life!
