Our commitment to eco issues is further strengthened

The Sustainability Club, led by Mr Arbuckle, and the senior school Eco Team, led by Mrs Staber, were rewarded by their hard work last session with the achievement of gaining Green Flag status again for St Columba's.

Over last session, members from the two groups, along with members of the school recycling team, completed Carbon Literacy training, helping the school get Bronze Green Tree Status from the Woodland Trust and then achieved a Green Flag award based on their combined efforts to raise awareness of Climate Change, Sustainability, Carbon Reduction and Recycling across the school.

The club lead assemblies on topics such as Climate Change and recycling, along with the creation of a school Sustainability Pledge. The group also produced eco audits and action plans, campaigned for the end of single use water bottles in school, implemented wider recycling programmes, tree planting, clothes swaps and much more, all their actions helped to complete what was described as a 'fantastic' application by the Eco School‘Keep Scotland beautiful’ programme

The Eco Schools programme may even use some of the excellent material compiled last session by the St Columba's group as examples of good practice to inspire other schools. Well done and thanks to all involved.
