Junior 3 pupils carefully analyse owl pellets

We hear that Junior 3 have recently been having a ‘Hoot’ enjoying their current in class topic.

The class have been busy learning about owls, after recently reading the book ‘The owl who is afraid of the dark’ by Jill Thompson. The group have experienced a range of activities with reference to the book. Pupils have practiced their communication and writing skills after receiving eek-mails from the baby barn owl, Plop, and challenged their artistic abilities while creating mixed media owl portraits.

The pupils were able to continue their Owl investigation after being able to spend the afternoon dissecting owl pellets.  Equipped with their gloves and tweezers, J3 were able to uncover the remains of what the local owls had been eating, questioning which animals the bones may have originally come from. Each pupil took great care, as they handled and analysed the delicate bones uncovered from each pellet. Taking the time to lay their findings out onto black card, to be carefully wrapped and sealed later. Our Rector, Mrs Reilly, visited the Junior School to hear all about Junior 3’s afternoon of dissection, learning of all the discoveries that the pupils had made.

During the afternoon, pupils who has finished their investigations enjoyed some mindful colouring too, continuing to utilise their meticulous skills and diligent hard work.
