Lucia G (SII) and Flora McM (SV) gain recognition in the Royal Scottish Academy Schools Art Award.

Congratulations to Lucia G, in Senior II, who has been awarded second prize in the Junior category of the Royal Scottish academy’s Schools art award.

RSA has been running the Schools Art Award since 1986. Awarding work that displays creativity, originality and skill, alongside supporting technique and observation. This year submissions have been made digitally and despite the pandemic over 600 entries were received.

Each category comprises two academic year groups (Junior SI & SII, Intermediate SIII & SIV and Senior SV & SVI). Prizes are awarded to those who gain First, Second and Third place and 10 Highly Commended certificates are awarded in each category.

A virtual ceremony was held on Thursday 22nd April, with Kate Downie RSA reiterating judges’ comments on each piece of work. Lucia’s artwork was described as a ‘beautiful, ethereal floating piece…we all loved it.’

Flora McM, in Senior SV, was also awarded Highly Commended in their very competitive Intermediate category.  From viewing alone it is clear why Flora's piece has been highly commended demonstrating creativity and skill.

You can view both artworks on our Social Media and read Lucia’s artist statement below.

Lucia G: "Robert Kushner was the main inspiration for the artwork I produced; an artist whom we studied thoroughly in class and whom I was extremely interested in. I very much enjoyed the still life unit on plants, during which we experimented with direct observation and did several drawings in black paint using some of the plants we had within the department. After this we started on our main composition, I firstly produced a geometric background to contrast with the organic shapes of the plants. The plants were then drawn over top and elaborated on using a variety of thick and thin lines. Personally, I think the placement of these plants and the use of colour were definitely two of the most important and significant factors when trying to create a unique composition. Overall, I felt very pleased with my end result, and took great pleasure in appreciating and recreating some of Kushner’s incredible work."
