Pupils from across the school have continued to help the school in reducing our own environmental footprint

Happy Global recycling day! There have been loads of amazing environmentally friendly events happening across the school, promoting recycling and sustainability.

Earlier in the year, all SIII and SIV Recycling Team volunteers attended a Carbon Literacy Day workshop, this was ran by Keep Scotland Beautiful. The workshop gave them an awareness of the carbon cost of many everyday activities. Helping encourage and understand how to reduce their emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis. The hard-working team have also been auditing the use of the Recycling bins, with volunteers being allocated for all areas of the Senior School.

To help everyone and make recycling easier at St Columba’s, the recycling team have produced and placed labels onto the bins. Even creating separate recycling boxes for pens, batteries and crisp packets.

Last term the Eco club gave an outstanding presentation on the importance of reusing clothes. They then ran a clothes swap encouraging pupils to recycle clothes within their community.

We recently had the Sustainability club help the school in understanding the importance of recycling, highlighting the dangers of micro-plastics. The sustainability club also created a Sustainability Pledge that was signed by a large part of the school community from both Junior and Senior school. Key elements in the pledge were to inspire everyone to reuse and recycle.

All these groups have actively encouraged our school community to recycle, motivating many students to use re-usable water bottles. Well done to all the pupils involved with these efforts, as they assist the entire school community in reducing the impact we have on our planet.
