St Columba's School Orchestra perform a virtual rendition of 'Over the Rainbow'

Throughout the lockdown, families from across the UK have been uniting every Thursday for a doorstep applause. We have all been encouraged to cheer, bash pans and clap for the nation's key workers, carers and NHS staff.

All St Columba’s pupils have embraced these moments, using their talents to unite and entertain their local neighbourhoods.

Rainbows now adorn windows in homes across Scotland, and have become a symbol of hope and happiness through these turbulent times. Rather fittingly, musicians have now adopted the well-known song ‘Over The Rainbow’ to help bring a ‘musical rainbow’ in support of all key workers, carers and NHS staff. The idea initially came from The Music Education and Partnership Group Scotland, who made available sheet music for almost all instruments.

We are lucky to have so many talented musicians at St Columba’s, including our outstanding orchestra. Inspired by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, members of our own school orchestra performed and edited together a virtual rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’. Carefully and beautifully put together by Music Prefect Isla M (SVI), the video includes pupils from Transitus to Senior VI. Isla is going on to study Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the video is testament to her musical talent.

Although lockdown has given musicians more time to practise, many are missing the inspiration and motivation that performing with in an orchestra brings. It is certain that many of us cannot wait for orchestras to be able to play together once again, but this video will definitely bring a smile to all those who watch it.

Despite the fact that playing to a screen during instrumental lessons is a less than ideal, every one of our musicians should be proud of the dedication they have shown.

Isla’s video of The St Columba’s School Orchestra’s ‘Over the Rainbow’ tribute is available to watch on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
