Our debating team continue to prove their skills through online tournaments

Congratulations are due for our  St Columba’s debate team, who have not let lockdown stop their hard work. During May and June our debaters have participated in 5 online competitions.

At the end of June pupils competed in an online tournament that followed a World Schools format. Two teams were entered with Sophie H, Stella McC and Anna T on one team, and Saoirse G, Cara E-M and Callum H, on the other.

All the pupils performed incredibly well. Originally the tournament had been planned that it would include  Junior and Senior divisions. However there had been a smaller turnout of Junior teams, allowing all pupils to participate in the main competition. This therefore meant that the younger pupils from St Columba’s would be contending with SV and SVI pupils. Considering the diverse age range the achievement by both teams is even more impressive.

Sophie, Stella and Anna placed 3rd overall, just missing out on the final due to Speaker points. Sophie H also claimed victory after placing as the ‘Best Junior overall’, followed closely by Stella who also placed as 4th best overall. On the Speaker Tab ,Sophie H placed in 2nd, with Saoirse  8th and Stella placed as 10th out of 36 speakers.

Well done to all our debaters who have participated in this tournament and the many other competitions throughout May and June. We doubt anyone else could argue against the debate club’s hard work and determination.
