60 saplings saw the benefit of the clubs' partnership

In March 2020, our Eco Club took in delivery of a 'copse' of 60 sapling trees. Provided by the Woodland Trust, the club received an variety of deciduous species including wild cherries, rowan, silver birch, dog rose, dog wood, hazel and hawthorn.

The Gardening Club used their skills and knowledge to nurse the saplings throughout the summer and autumn, tending to them in the garden adjacent to the Main Building.

Members of both the Gardening and Eco clubs collaborated to move over 20 of the young trees to what is hoped will be their lasting home in the open space beside the School’s astro pitch.

Our dedicated Gardening Club members, together with Head Gardener (and Depute Rector), Mr McLaughlin, spent the last remaining days of the winter term a potting the remaining 40 or so saplings for staff and parents of St Columba’s.

Well done Gardening & Eco Club on this fantastic collaboration - here's hoping that you will see the fruits of you labour soon and the spring will bring you lots more time outside!
